(Nature Conservation)
In the distant past, every Indian village had a story teller who would entertain the villagers with tales from the spectacular wild and miracles of Mother Earth. These stories played an important role in nurturing their connection with Nature.
Now LOKAA foundation has assumed the role of this story teller for the village.
One of the projects that Lokaa Foundation is currently focused on is “MY EARTH MY HOME” a campaign to nurture awareness about our precious Mother Earth and a mission to inspire individuals and organizations to create forest ecosystems all over India. The foundation alongside making efforts to preserve the forests and wild life here locally, has already transformed hundreds of acres in the region into rich forest scapes with over 170 different species of indigenous forest trees. These newly created forests have already become a happy home for the bee, the butterfly, the reptile and many other wild animals.
The Foundation has inspired hundreds of youth from the villages to be the custodians of these local forests.
The Indian forest
In the Indian forest, we have planted different species of trees from all over India.
To mention a few are species from eastern and western ghats mountain range of South India- red sandalwood, peepal tree, gooseberry, banyan, babool, saptarangi are few of the trees that are planted.
THE MIYAWAKI FOREST
Miyawaki forests are densely packed forests. Typically in a forest the space between trees is 12- 15 feet but in the Miyawaki it is 3-5 feet. And the root systems of trees in Miyawaki co- operate and support each other to facilitate rapid growth.
The Miyawaki forests we are creating has 120 different forest species that are indigenous to Andhra and Telangana states of India. This Miyawaki forest will be one of its kind in India !
THE VELIKONDA INDIGENOUS FOREST
This forest consists of trees that are indigenous to the Velikonda range.
The Velikonda Range or Velikonda Hills that form part of the Eastern Ghats mountain range system, in eastern India starts with this hill range.
Some of the trees here are terminalia arjuna, golden shower tree, moduga or flame of the forest trees and others.
THE NATURAL FOREST
The fourth Kind of forests we are cultivating is the natural forest. That is, this forest scape is perhaps thousands of years old and has been left undisturbed. In the natural forest are extremely rare and tough to propagate species of trees. The Indian Government is trying very hard to propagate these species. The density of these trees in this forest is astounding.
In the water bodies in these forests, we are planting trees which will support the nesting of migratory Birds. We are engaging local village children and young people from all over the world in creating these forests.
